Obituary for Mathew "Sam" Green (aka Matthew Sam Greene)

Mathew "Sam" Green (aka Matthew Sam Greene)
Mathew Green was born in Sheldon, South Carolina on October 2, 1922 to the late George and Virginia Green. He was educated in Sheldon, Beaufort County, South Carolina. He was affectionately known as "Sam" to his family members and friends. Sam entered Heaven's gates suddenly on February 16, 2018, after a brief illness.

Sam moved to New York after the death of his parents. He briefly lived in the Bronx with his Aunt Ada (Gadsen), and later came to White Plains, where he lived with his Uncle Andrew. He lived on Lake Street in White Plains for over 40 years.

Sam was married to Beatrice Green (Stevenson) on January 12, 1952.

Sam accepted Christ into his life at an early age. He was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church for over 70 years. He served for many years as the Chief Usher and was a member of the Trustee Board and Men's Choir. Sam was also a member of the Westchester Usher's Assembly (WUA) and the United Ushers Benevolent League (UUBL), where he served as Chief Marshall.

Sam worked for many years at Larson Ford in White Plains prepping cars. He worked for more than 25 years at The Home Saving Bank in North White Plains as a custodian, retiring in 1988.

Sam's favorite past time was baseball. His favorite team was the Brooklyn Dodgers. After the Dodgers moved to California, he became a Mets fan but would still claim the Dodgers. You could find him on every bus trip to Shea Stadium that was sponsored by the Usher Board. At the family cookouts to Croton or Mohansic Park (now known as Roosevelt State Park), you would always find Sam on the baseball field, covering first or second base. Even at 95, he claimed to still own a baseball mitt. He would tell you that he was still playing. He also enjoyed going to the Apollo Theater for their gospel shows where he was frequently accompanied by his niece, Adrienne.

Sam is survived by two siblings, John Greene and Ruby Green; his devoted sister-in-law, Florence (Herbert) Greene; devoted nephew, Herbert A. Greene and nieces, Adrienne Randall, Gail Bass, Sandra Davis and Edwinna Albergottie-Reed; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He also leaves to mourn, his extended family at Surehealth Assisted Living in Bowie, MD - Lucy Okeke; and personal caregiver, Charles Chimeziri.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, George and Virginia (Jenkins) Greene; wife Beatrice; brothers: Nehemiah Green, Ashley, George, Alfred, Herbert and Edward Greene; sisters: Bertha Albergottie, Rachel and Thelma Green.
