Dr. Brenda Davis

Listen to Obituary
A retired educator and school social worker, Dr. Brenda Grant Davis was born in Harlem, New York and educated in the New York City Public School System. After graduating from George Washington High School, she spent her undergraduate years at Western College for Women (Miami University of Ohio-Oxford, Ohio), with study concentration in American History, Political Science and Intercultural Studies, and completed a field placement in education at Garfield High School, in Hamilton. Ohio.

After completing her studies, Dr. Davis was employed as a caseworker with the New York City Department of Social Services before obtaining a National Institute of Mental Health grant in the field of the Aging, which facilitated attendance at New York University Graduate School of Social Work, where she obtained a Master Degree in Social Work. She pursued professional service in the areas of adolescent residential treatment at Wiltwyck School for Boys (Yorktown Heights, New York) and St. Mary's-In-The-Field (Valhalla, New York), as well as clinical family treatment services at Soundview-Throgs Neck Community Mental Health Center Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University (Bronx, New York). Later returning to the field of education as a school social worker, she was employed by the Yonkers Board of Education and the Mamaroneck Union Free School District before completing a twenty-five year tenure with the White Plains Public Schools (White Plains, New York). During that time, she also devoted attention to academic achievement, obtaining a Master Degree in Education and a Doctorate Degree in Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.

A 2005 short-tem1 mission trip to Kericho, Kenya, through the sponsorship of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, brought an epiphany of awakening regarding Dr. Davis' ministry call to mission. She subsequently obtained the Master of Divinity Degree at Alliance Theological Seminary (Nyack College). Enrollment in the Doctor of Ministry Program at Alliance, where she completed all necessary requirements with the exception of the dissertation, was interrupted because of health issues. She was awarded a citation "...in honor and recognition of her accomplishments, her character, her deep compassion, and her studies...".

She was an avid reader and enthusiastic traveler, who enjoyed the cultural exchanges afforded by her solo excursions (Belgium, England, France, Jamaica, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Netherlands, and Switzerland), People-to-People Student Ambassador escort opportunities (Australia, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden), mission partnerships (Kenya and South Africa), and curriculum offerings (Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Israel).

In addition to her committed ministry service with Bethel Baptist Church (White Plains, New York), Mount Olivet Baptist Church (Peekskill, New York), Union Baptist Church (White Plains, New York) and Central Hudson Baptist Association. Dr. Davis was a member of the White Plains Rotary Club and the White Plains Historical Society.

Charitable donations to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and/or American Red Cross Disaster Relief are suggested in lieu of flowers.
