Corine Bradley of Elmsford, New York slipped into eternal rest on Sunday, November 17, 2019. She was 100 years old and died peacefully of natural causes.
Corine was born to loving parents, Sampson and Lela (Copeland) Addison on June 26, 1919 in Sumter, South Carolina. Their close-knit family included siblings Marie, Oscar, Carrie, Smith, Georgia, Alice, Beatrice and Jay. All pre-deceased her. She maintained a very close relationship with her siblings and their children over the years. In July 1941, she married her childhood friend James Bradley of Bishopville, South Carolina. They relocated to Harlem, New York seeking new opportunities for employment. When James entered the army during World War II, Corine returned to Sumter, South Carolina until the War was over.
When James returned from the War, they returned to New York moved to the Bronx, raised their daughters and eventually moved to Elmsford, New York. While living in the Bronx, the whole family was confirmed as Episcopalians and attended St. Andrew’s Church, on Castle Hill Avenue. When the family moved to Elmsford, they were referred to Grace Episcopal Church, White Plains. During her active years at Grace, Corine participated in the daytime ECW group, attended Bible Study group and with her granddaughter Tiffany, helped organized a North White Plains youth group.
Corine had a variety of interests and talents especially cooking, sewing, renovating furniture, listening to Opera and classical music, doing Word Search and Crossword Puzzles, reading, crocheting, knitting and shopping (her favorite). The Bradley family travelled several times during the year to South Carolina which helped James and Corine maintain a close relationship with their parents and their siblings who still resided there.
Corine stayed home to raise her family and maintain a comfortable home that was the center of all activities for the immediate family, her nieces and nephews and grandchildren. Corine cared for her husband, James when he began to lose his eyesight at an early age. After he retired early, due to the loss of his sight, Corine decided to obtain a job with the New York City Board of Education in the Bronx. She started working in the cafeteria, became a School Aide, and eventually an Educational Assistant. During this time, she returned to school to obtain an Associate Degree. Education was always an important element in her life, not only for her children but for herself. After obtaining her degree, she worked in the Reading and Math Labs, assisting teachers with class instruction. Her working did not prevent her from having a very close relationship with her granddaughter and grandson. She was actively involved in their development and education.
Corine loved to celebrate the holidays, especially birthdays with family. After the death of James (they had been married 70 years) she became less active and was satisfied to spend her time at home with her daughters, son-in law (until his death) and grandchildren. She always expressed gratitude for living in her own home. She would often say how comfortable her home was and that “I’m doing the best I can for an old lady”.
Corine did the best she could as a daughter, sibling, wife, mother, mother-in-law, aunt, Grandmother and teacher. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Virginia Mae Bradley-McCutchen, Greensboro, NC. She will be missed by her daughters who survive her: Altermiese Bradley, White Plains, New York, Sandy Gadsden-McAllister, Ossining, New York, Brinda Bradley, Elmsford, New York. Her grandchildren: Tiffany D. Bradley and Dominique J. Bradley. She will be mourned by a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and a host of friends. Her youngest daughter, Deborah D. Bradley, pre-deceased her in 2018.
