Delois Spearman

Listen to Obituary
Delois Spearman transitioned from this life peacefully on June 17, 2025 at the age of 93. She was born on December 14, 1931 in Kenansville, North Carolina to Addie Mae Brinson-Dixon and Hubert Dixon. She was valedictorian, graduating first in her class from Rosehill High School in June of 1951. Against her father’s wishes, Delois left home to attend Saint Augustine University in Raleigh, North Carolina where she studied for a year and completed a certificate program in nursing. Delois left North Carolina in search of opportunity and adventure in New York where she found work and lived with her Aunt, Lucile Coleman, in Yonkers, New York.

While visiting family in Port Chester on her day off, a friend, Mary Miller, introduced Delois to Norman Spearman, and the adventure began. Delois Dixon married Norman C. Spearman on February 5, 1954 in Greenwich, Connecticut. Delois became a stepmother to Norman’s daughter Norma “Toni” Spearman-Morton, moving from Yonkers to South Regent Street in Port Chester, New York to begin their journey. Delois continued working, and in 1968 joined United Hospital as a “Blue Girl”, supporting the nursing staff. Delois envisioned being a nurse and through educational programs at United she attended Westchester Community College to complete her Associates Degree, becoming a Practical Nurse. Shortly thereafter, Delois enrolled in Pace University in White Plains, New York to attain her Bachelor’s Degree, and in January 1974, Delois realized her goal in becoming a Registered Nurse. Delois, affectionately known as “Dee” by her coworkers, enjoyed helping people, and received several awards from United Hospital in recognition of stellar Patient Care. After rising to the rank of head nurse, Delois retired from United Hospital after 24 years of service in August 1992. However, Delois could never sit still, she continued her outreach with St. Francis AME Zion Church, feeding the homeless and raising money for United Hospital. Delois also joined several seniors groups where she learned to play bridge, traveled through Italy, visited Ernest Hemmingway’s Floridian home, and enjoyed summers on Martha’s Vineyard.

Delois was predeceased by her husband Norman of 44 years. She is survived by three sisters: Margaret E. Tucker of White Plains, New York; Evra Annette Crawl of White Plains, New York, and Katie Ruth Dixon of Long Beach, California. She is also survived by her Stepdaughter Norma Morton, Norma’s husband Carl Morton of Elmsford, New York; her God-daughter Jacqueline Tucker of Scarsdale, New York; Denise Tucker of Marietta, Georgia, and a host of Nieces, Nephews, extended Family and Friends.
