Dora Slaughter
Dora Marie Slaughter was born in Danora, Pennsylvania to Hadley Carlton Royster and Ollie Moore Royster. Marie, the name she was best known by, moved with her family to Winston, North Carolina after the death of her mother. Her family relocated to Yonkers, N.Y., and there she attended elementary school and Gorton High School. After graduating from Gorton, she attended dietary school. Her family attended Messiah Baptist church and there she was baptized.
Marie had an interesting work history, beginning at the New York Stock Exchange. Leaving there after several years, she went to work for Burroughs Welcome Pharmaceutical Company in Tuckahoe, N.Y and was an employee there until they closed. She then worked for the New York Telephone Company until she retired in 1991.
Marie was happily married to Martin Slaughter and moved to White Plains in 1963. Together they raised a beautiful daughter, Donna. Martin passed away in 2007.
Mrs. Slaughter loved to travel and took her vacations in a variety of locations including Canada and the Caribbean Islands. Her favorite of all places was Bermuda.
Marie had a wonderful sense of humor and was quite the prankster. She loved to make people laugh and often commanded the center of attention as she grew older. Family and those that cared most for her benefited most from her comedic and loving spirit.
Marie became a devoted member of the First Community Baptist Church in White Plains, N.Y. She looked forward to Sundays and attended service religiously until she took ill and was less able to do so.
Dora Marie Slaughter will be missed by many family members and friends. She leaves behind her only daughter, Donna and son-in-law, Larry Thomas.
She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews from Florida, including: Edwina Pace; Marjorie Edwards Bernard; Marc Royster (Patsy); John Royster (Mia); Phillip John Sr (Nina) and grandniece Nina, Phillip Jr, Deland, Kyle, Timothy, Kayla and Jonathan.

ATTENTION: During this COVID-19 crisis, as we slowly begin to phase back into small capacity public visitations/services, we need your help in limiting and controlling the number of people inside the church AND cemetery. WE HAVE DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR SERVICES THIS FRIDAY 10/16 - PLEASE READ IN DETAIL BELOW BEFORE EVEN ATTEMPTING TO ATTEND ANYTHING PLEASE! Thank you so kindly!
Guaranteed seating for the visitation/wake on Fri., 10/16 is by invitation of the family explicitly only. What IS being ALLOWED for others, however, is a constant stream of attendees, socially distanced, to just BRIEFLY do a 'walk through viewing', give their respects, and leave, during the 11:00AM-11:55AM TIME period ONLY. So during that time period, as instructed, with your masks on & phones away, you will be allowed to come to the front door, get hand sanitizer, sign the register book (NOTE: please feel free to bring your own pen), walk through to offer any brief condolence to the family keeping social distance (NO touching/hugging/handshaking, ONLY elbow bumping briefly if at all), briefly view, and then leave the building & premises if you've not been extended an invitation to sit & stay and if the church is at their restricted capacity. Once 11:55AM comes, casket will be closed, and if at capacity no one else will be admitted and all not assigned a seat must leave the church & vicinity. The Funeral Service guaranteed seating is for INVITED attendees of the family explicitly only. Please follow & abide by the directions of the funeral home staff, church and/or cemetery personnel at all times. Kensico Cemetery
Unfortunately due to the seriousness of the COVID pandemic, there are restrictions & limitations on the number of people that can be in attendance anywhere, including at the cemetery for burial. So we RESPECTFULLY ask that if you've not been specifically invited & confirmed by the family to attend the burial, please do NOT try to come to the cemetery. The cemetery is EXTREMELY strict with their guidelines, and WILL REFUSE to allow the burial to take place if we have more people than they allow. So if you show up uninvited, you're only doing a disservice to the family, because burial may be refused. Thank you for being respectful of restrictions & the family, and honoring the life of & services arranged for Dora Marie Slaughter.
