Eunice Leona Hobbs

Born March 30, 1919 in New York, NY Eunice L. Hobbs passed away quietly in her sleep on Saturday July 27, 2019, at White Plains Hospital. She was the first-born of three children to Ernest Hobbs and Constance (Cadogan Hobbs). Eunice moved as a young child to Barbados where she was partially raised by her grandparents and attended the St Albans Girls School. When she returned to the United States at around 12 or 13 years old, she completed her academic education through post-secondary secretarial studies. Upon returning to the United States Eunice and her family which now included her brother, Victor and sister Enid resided in Harlem, NY on East 127th Street.

After completing her post-secondary education Eunice was able to gain employment with the Federal Government working for the division of Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS). Her career with INS began on Ellis Island where she worked with people trying to obtain entry to the USA, she worked diligently through the years and eventually became a supervisor of her department.

In the late 1970’s Eunice and her mother moved from their residence in Harlem to live with her sister’s family in White Plains, New York; so that they could care for their aging mother together. Eunice continued to work for INS until her retirement in mid 1990s from 26 Federal Plaza.

Eunice was a member of St. Philips Church in Harlem where she enjoyed praising and worshiping God amongst her Christian family for many decades and was a member of the church choir for a few years. She enjoyed traveling on church organized annual trips over the Memorial Day weekends as well as, bus outings to the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and summer picnic boat rides to Bear Mountain. Eunice had a special affection for “the young folks” and contributed to the Sunday School programs at St Philips.

Travel and experiencing the various cultures of the world was something Eunice enjoyed; she has been to Hawaii, England, Canada, and some African countries. Sewing from her own designs or the more complex Vogue patterns, was another favorite activity; baking, especially fruitcakes at Christmas, shopping (hats were a favorite), doing word puzzle challenges with her sister and dancing to the beat of calypso music were among the other things she enjoyed.

Eunice now joins her mother, father, sister, brother, niece, nephew and several in-laws in her heavenly home to enjoy life everlasting. As we say goodbye to Eunice’s physical presence, her many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews will always carry her spirit and zest for life with them as they traverse the adventures of their own lives that she always encouraged.

Eunice was loved and will be remembered by many for her kindness and generosity. She is survived by nieces & nephews: Alicia Hobbs – Rogers, Lawrence Hobbs, Sonya Larrieux, David Welch, Jocelynne Ross, Adrienne Welch and Louise Taitt; Niece – in-laws Lavert Henderson, Alice Welch, Shaneeka Welch and Aurelia Larrieux, Nephew-in-law Jean-Robert Larrieux: Grand-nieces & nephews: Tiana Rogers, Eric Larrieux, Alex Larrieux Devin Welch, Alexis Ross, Deighton Hobbs, Ayana Hobbs, Helena Hobbs, Laureen Pellegrino.
