Evadney Brown

Listen to Obituary
Evadney Brown (nee Watson) affectionately known as Brownie, Momma, Vadney, Watson or Vi was born on May 10, 1927, in Marchtown Hanover, Jamaica W.I. to Francis Bailey and George Watson. She was the youngest of four children. After losing her mother and grandmother at an early age she moved with her father to Middle Quarters, St. Elizabeth. There she attended finishing school where she learned the art of sewing and became a skilled seamstress. She eventually made her way to Kingston where she started her own successful dress shop specializing in wedding gowns.

Blessed with the gift to care for others, in 1966 Vadney immigrated to the United States in pursuit of a better life for her and her family. She worked tirelessly as a nanny to the Vonstein family whom she would remain closest of friends with until her passing. Continuing to share her gift, Evadney entered the nursing profession working at White Plains Hospital until her retirement.

In 1978 she achieved her ultimate goal of bringing her daughter to the United States followed closely by her grandchildren. She never stopped caring for her remaining relatives in Jamaica.

She retired in 1991 and continued to share her gift by caring for her great grandchildren and the children of her friends. Her home was always open to anyone who needed a soft place to land.

When she was not caring for others, she pursued her other loves; gardening, cooking and sewing. Her gardens produced food and flowers that were shared with others. No one who came to visit would leave her home hungry, even the birds. Being an expert seamstress, she was able to quickly create an article of clothing for anyone who needed or wanted it.

Evadney was an active participant and an unwavering supporter of her church Little Mount Zion well into her golden years. She received the right hand of fellowship May 10, 1970. She was appointed a deaconess & later became a mother of the church and an ordained missionary. She was a prayer warrior planting and cultivating seeds from bible studies to prayer meetings. Among her many lasting legacies within the church Evadney will always be known as a trailblazer. She was the first Jamaican to join Little Mount Zion paving the way for others and was an unstoppable force in fundraising. She ushered Jamaica to victory every year in the state rally!

Evadney is survived by her daughter Learis, grandchildren Charmaine (Frank), Clement, Kadie, Ted (Corrette), Neil, Tyece W(Marlon), Noel & Tyece M. She is also survived by her nine great grandchildren & four great, great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, a whole host of relatives, friends and her church family.

On July 23rd Evadney was gently called home to receive her crown for a life well lived. She had finished her race.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leaford, brothers Artel & Lascelles, sister Vita and her adopted children Baldwin and Dahlia.
