Fannie Estelle Smithson was born in Petersburg, Virginia on March 26, 1928, to the late Charles Lee and Mary Graves. She departed this life peacefully on August 23, 2021.
Fannie received her early education in the Petersburg school district, and she graduated from the historic Peabody High School.
Fannie professed her love of Christ and was baptized at an early age at Oak Street AME Zion church in Petersburg. After graduating from high school, she was united in matrimony to the late Raleigh Smithson, and relocated to the White Plains area. Two children, Howard and Beverly, were born to this union.
Fannie joined Union Baptist Church in Greenburgh, NY. She loved her church family and made many long-standing friendships over the years. Fannie was a member of the Union Baptist Missionary ministry for many years. In this ministry she worked in the kitchen and delivered meals to home-bound seniors.
Fannie worked at AT&T in White Plains for 20 years. She began as a part time overseas operator, and later as a full time clerical worker. Aside from her work life and raising her family, she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading, attending family gatherings, and she was an excellent cook.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Howard Smithson (Cheryl) and Beverly; a grandson Lee Smithson (Yoanna); a great granddaughter Elliya Smithson; two sisters-in-law Mildred Smithson and Geraldine Smithson; a devoted niece Rose Wyatt; along with a number of nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.
We are grateful for the life of Fannie Smithson. We treasure her in our hearts and give thanks for the love, guidance and friendship that she has given us. May her generosity of spirit be a lasting light for all of us.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a contribution to the American Heart Association.
