Joan Dolman

Listen to Obituary
Joan Elizabeth Mebane Dolman was born on October 28, 1938, in Valhalla, NY, to the late John and Sylvia Heath Mebane. After the untimely passing of her parents during her childhood, she and her sister Geraldine were raised by their dear Aunt Elfie Wilson from the age of four.

Joan attended Greenburgh Schools until ninth grade and graduated from White Plains High School in 1956. She pursued her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse at the Westchester School of Nursing in Valhalla, graduating in 1959. Her dedication to caring for others shone brightly during her work at Grasslands Hospital (Westchester Medical Center) and White Plains Hospital, and through her 27 years of service as a school nurse in the Greenburgh Central 7 School District.

In 1960, Joan met the love of her life, Nathan Dolman, and they were married in June 1962. Together, they built a beautiful family, welcoming their children, Darryl Tod and Sylvia Rochelle Dolman.

Joan had a zest for life that was evident in her many passions. She loved to travel, especially on cruises, and enjoyed countless shopping trips with her sister and friends. For over 40 years, she delighted in Saturday Uno game luncheons, and her garden was a testament to her love for plants and flowers, especially hydrangeas. Joan also had a special talent for hosting parties with friends and family, where her love for cooking and baking truly shone. Her gatherings were filled with warmth, laughter, and delicious treats, creating memories cherished by all who attended. She loved to be behind the camera, capturing moments that would become treasured memories. Music brought her great joy, with Ray Charles and James Cleveland being among her favorite artists.

A devoted member of Union Baptist Church since 1950, Joan served in various roles, including the Jr Missionaries, Jr Choir, Wade Chorale, Mass Choir, and the Flower Ministry, which she organized and led as President from 1995.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, John and Sylvia Heath Mebane, her beloved Aunt Elfie Wilson, Uncle David Mebane, and sister Geraldine M. Vaden. She leaves behind her loving husband, Nathan Dolman, her cherished children, Darryl and Sylvia, her adored granddaughter, Aniyah Cole, and her dear nephew, Jeffrey Vaden.

Joan’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who knew her.
