Joel Burton

Joel Albert Burton, 20, the youngest son of Albert and Sharon Burton, was born on May 5, 1992 in Oceanside, New York. Joel was an answer to prayer. Joel was baptized at the age of 19 months at DeWitt Reformed Church, in Manhattan, New York, by his father who was pastor.

Joel loved his educational experience in the White Plains Public Schools. As a student, Joel distinguished himself by making perfect scores on the social studies and writing state test. In 2008, Joel participated in the White Plains Invitational Science Research Program held at White Plains High School. Joel was awarded 2nd Place Medicine & Health Award for his research on the treatment of sickle cell anemia.

Joel graduated from White Plains High School in 2010. In September of that year, he entered Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York. His major was biology.

Joel was an active member of Allen A.M.E. Church in White Plains, New York. In September 2012, Joel was awarded the Edna Harris Scholarship by the Allen A.M.E. Church Scholarship Committee.

Joel's hobbies included reading, writing poetry and short stories, creating music on the piano and electric keyboard, bowling, skateboarding, and stand-up comedy. Additionally, Joel participated in Occupy Wall Street, at Zuccotti Park, located in Lower Manhattan.

Joel is survived by his parents, Albert and Sharon Burton; his brother, David Michael Burton; his grandmothers, Jeroleen Brown and Ethelreda Burton, and a host of relatives, cousins and friends. On Saturday, December 1, Joel went home to be with the Lord.
