Lawrence Salley

Listen to Obituary
Lawrence (Larry) C. Salley, retired Westchester County Commissioner of Transportation, passed away on July 6, 2016. He was the loving husband of Sondra Craine Salley. He is survived by his daughter, Nyle Lynn Salley and three sisters, Ruby, Laverne and Birdie Lou, and a host of family, friends and community admirers.

Larry was born at home in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn and was baptized at Bethel Tabernacle AME Church in Brooklyn. He began his professional career after graduating from William Penn University with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Urban Design, and a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Hunter College. Over the course of his career, he served as a Planner for the NYC Planning Commission, the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation and the Tri-State Regional Planning Commission. The highlights of his career were his leadership roles as Deputy Commissioner of The Westchester County Department of Planning and Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Transportation.

He was a dedicated citizen, serving as Chairman of the White Plains Housing Authority; Chairman of the Housing committee of the African American Men of Westchester; Member of the NYS Mass Transit Task Force (the group responsible for working on the TZ Bridge replacement); and a member of The Arts Council of Westchester Board of Directors.

For all of his professional accomplishments and civic commitments, the real Larry Salley was best known as a “Jazz Man”; a lover of great African and African American music and musicians, a gifted photographer, an avid sports fan (especially basketball!) and a loyal friend. Most of all, he was fun-loving, with an easy laugh, a big heart and a generous spirit.

A Memorial Service will be held on July 16th at 11am in the Little Theatre of the Westchester County Center. His photographs will be on exhibit at the Arts Council of Westchester in White Plains, NY. Please contact them directly for exhibition dates at (914) 428-4220. Additional information and condolences may also be left online at www.LeesFuneralHome.com

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Arts Westchester in Larry’s name.
