Lucille Rattigan

Listen to Obituary
Lucille Icilda Rattigan was born November 1,1925 in Greywood St. Ann Jamaica, to Eustace and Doris Creighton. She was the eldest of five children. While living in Greenwood, she gave birth to her first child, Thelma, and afterwards she moved to Kingston to enhance her quality of life.

During her time in Kingston, she worked as a seamstress and soon thereafter she met the love of her life, Melward Rattigan. They got married and this union produced ten children. As a mother of eleven children, she was a strong disciplinarian enforcing the proverb "do not spare the rod and spoil the child." This approach helped her to impart good manners, integrity and sound values to her children.

Providing for her famillv could then be easily described as the instance in the Bible where Christ fed the multitude with five loafs and two fish. She could multiply a pot of food to feed her entire household. She was a doctor in her own rights, as she was very proficient in finding the cure for infections such as chicken pox, measles, mumps and was even able to save the life of her young child who was diagnosed with a crippling disease. Praying at nights was a must, as she counted heads to ensure that all of her children were present. Lucille was a woman of strength, tenacity and fortitude, while displaying care and concerns to her friends and neighbors.

In 1972, she emigrated to the United States, White Plains, New York, where she worked as a home health aide, caring for the sick while continuing to care for her family. Then in 1985 her journey took a sudden turn when she lost her dearly beloved husband due to illness. Lucille enjoyed companionship, so the next few years were spend living with several of her children where her role as "grandma" became her primary occupation.

In 2001 she moved to Bowie, Maryland to reside with her youngest son, Colin, and this became her permanent home. She would go to the Senior Center where she learned and mastered the art creating fantastic ceramic pieces and crocheting items which became her hobby. Lucille enjoyed spending time with her family, attending special events and always baked a cake for every occasion.

As she went on in age, her health gradually deteriorated and on November 21,2019, when she succumbed to her illness and transitioned peacefully in her sleep.

Lucille was preceded by her husband Melward and daughter Janet. She will be sadly missed by her ten children: Thelma, Douris, Melvin, Alicia (Maggie), Marcia (Tiny), Donald, Audrey, Colin, Jacqueline and Carol; 21 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson, and a host family and friends.

Rest in peace Ma, Grandma, MaLou, Miss. Ratty!!!
