Margaree Rhodes

Listen to Obituary
To Everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven
Ecclesiastes 3:1

A time to be Born Margaree Viola Robinson Rhodes of White Plains, NY was born on May 5,1928 in New York City to Selena Robinson and Richard Roberts. She and her late sister, Julia, were reared by a dear aunt and uncle, Earnestine and Paul Chisholm in Seabrook, SC

A time to Acquire She was educated in Beaufort County and attended the historic Penn Center (formerly Penn Normal Industrial & Agricultural School) on St. Helena Island.

Similar to experiences in “Warmth of Other Suns”, Margaree migrated to New York in 1949, where she did domestic work for many families in Westchester County. When one of the families began a business (ROWOCO), she remained in their employ as both a domestic and as a clerk.

A time to Plant In her youth, she was a member of Huspah Baptist Church and baptized in Huspa Creek. In 1949, Margaree united with Calvary Baptist under the leadership of Rev. Hayward Morris. She and Leroy Rhodes, who predeceased her in 1985, were married at Calvary in 1958 by Rev. W. T. Young. Calvary Baptist Church continued to be an important part of Margaree’s life. In 2007, she received a Church and Community Mothers Appreciation Award. Margaree served under each of Calvary’s six pastors and was a faithful member of the Gospel Chorus, Pastor’s Aide, Women’s Fellowship and Sunday School when health permitted.

A Time to Laugh Margaree relished spending time with family and friends while breaking bread and sharing a laugh. She was known for her sweet potato pies and, a distant second, was her version of a Waldorf salad.

A Time to Die During more than six decades as a resident, Margaree often enjoyed walking around White Plains and vicinity. I can imagine that on November 24, 2021 her knees were replaced and she is now walking around Heaven.

A Time of Legacy In March of 2000, Margaree was predeceased by her first born, Johnnie Leroy. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Olivia and an innumerable host of relatives and friends.
