Margaret Hargrove

Margaret Juliarette Hargrove was born in Nottoway County, Virginia on July 6, 1923 to Julia Matthews Anderson and Anthony Anderson. She was the second youngest of eight children, five boys and three girls. She attended Nottoway Baptist Church and Public schools in the small town of Crewe, Virginia. She showed an early love of sports playing volleyball and basketball. In high school, in addition to the sports teams, she joined the debate team. After graduating high school in 1941, she went to nursing school in Virginia before taking a job with the US Navy Department in Washington DC at the beginning of World War II from 1942 to 1947.

After her employment with the Navy, she moved to White Plains, New York in 1947 and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She named her daughter Lena Mae Anderson, after her favorite older sister Lena Rhodes. She worked several factory jobs before her employment with the New York telephone company. In spite of the prejudice she faced as one of few women of color that worked as a telephone operator, she excelled and was promoted to the clerical department where she facilitated document production.

In 1958 she met John Hargrove through mutual friends and they were married in 1960 at Mount Hope AME Zion Church. In addition to being a wife and mother, she became an active church member joining the Missionary Ministry, the Table of Grace Ministry, and the Lay Council in order to care for and love on others. In 2006 the Westchester County Executive awarded her a certificate of Distinguished Service acknowledging her dedication to Mount Hope AME Zion church and the White Plains Community.

Margaret loved all sports but her favorite thing to do was bowl with her telephone company colleagues who brought home the 49th New York State Women's Bowling Association Championship in 1983 in Rochester, NY. She and John were known for hosting their card parties where friends enjoyed a friendly game of Pinochle or Bid Whist with friends and family.

Predeceased in death by her husband of 57 years, John, Margaret died on March 3, 2024 at the age of 100. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Lena Anderson, nieces and nephews in North Carolina—Inez McMillan and Edith Logan, Florida—Celestine Brown and her husband Willie Brown—and Detroit as well as stepchildren—John Hargrove Jr., Caesar Marshall, Ed Marshall and Leila Tullos, and grand daughters, Julia Anderson-Lee, Adrianne Gray, grandson Christopher Lee, and several Great-grandchildren, grand-nieces cousins and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday March 13th, 2024 - friends to gather & visit starting 4:00PM, Memorial Service to start 5:00PM at Mt. Hope AME Zion Church with limited capacity. So you may come to the Church to try to attend, & feel free to wear masks. But the family & church will be live-streaming the Memorial Service, & so it'll also available on their & our website the day of the service where it says WATCH WEBCAST, so you're able to view on their/our website/here also/instead. At the very least you can get hand sanitizer & sign the register book (NOTE: please feel free to bring your own pen). If not at capacity, you will be allowed in to have a seat; but if at capacity by the time you get there, you may be required to leave the premises after signing register book, so as not to be in violation nor cause a health hazard, so please govern yourself accordingly. Regardless of if you're able to enter/be seated, or not, please refrain from too much touching/hugging/handshaking, preferably elbow bumping briefly if at all. If instructed, PLEASE KINDLY RESPECTFULLY leave the building & premises if the church is at their capacity. PLEASE KINDLY RESPECTFULLY follow & abide by the directions of the funeral home staff and/or church personnel at all times. Private cremation has already been held. A public Memorial Service is being planned for Wednesday March 13th, 2024 - friends to gather & visit starting 4:00PM, Memorial Service to start 5:00PM at Mt. Hope AME Zion Church. Please still leave condolences now herein on the Memory Wall to express your sorrow, share your memories, and as an expression of sympathy & way to communicate with/offer comfort to the family, that they and others may see, and may be a lasting tribute in her honor, whether you're able to attend or not. Definitely Please SIGN IN on the Memory Wall as a virtual way of signing the register book, especially if choosing to stay safe/not able to sign in person.

Hope AME Zion Church (address herein under Service Location), and/or you may choose to plant a tree in her name/memory/honor. If sending flowers despite the family's request, sending small plants or vases is preferable & may be delivered on either on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024 by/before 2:30PM to Lee's Funeral Home; or on Wednesday, March 13th between 3:30-4:00PM to Mt.
