Mary Anne Malson

Listen to Obituary
Mary Anne (Lee) Malson transitioned to Glory on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, following a brief illness. Mary Anne was born on August 10, 1947, to the late Willie Mae and Clark Lee. A graduate of the White Plains School System, Mary attended SUNY Potsdam, earning a BA degree in Education. After graduating, Mary Anne taught fourth and fifth grades for thirty-four years in the North Rockland Central School District. She served as a peer teacher mentor while working at West Haverstraw Elementary School. Over time, she continued her educational pursuits at Fairfield University in Connecticut and Montclair State University in New Jersey. Believing that we cannot afford to let our children fall behind, during the pandemic she provided in-home instruction for her then-six-year-old and four-year-old great nephews. Mary Anne was a multi-year entrant in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, White Plains, New York since the age of 8, Mary Anne worked in many of the church’s organizations and ministries. She served as an Usher, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and Methodist Youth Fellowship and Education Chairperson. She helped develop and write the church’s Safe Sanctuary Policy. Mary Anne was a founding member of The Voices of Trinity Choir, having served as Vice President, President, and Chaplain. She participated in the annual Women’s Day choir. She served as Co-Chairperson of Women’s Day numerous times. Mary Anne has also been a Church Trustee, Secretary of the Administrative Council, and a member of the Bereavement Ministry. She served on the church’s 112th Anniversary Committee. In the United Methodist Women, now United Women in Faith, Mary Anne served as Secretary, Vice President responsible for programming, and President. During her presidency, the women developed an annual July cereal donation program benefiting The Ecumenical Food Pantry located at the Slater Center in White Plains.

Mary Anne was co-editor of Trinity’s newsletter, The Voice. She was responsible for writing The Voices of Trinity’s annual concert program, The Pre-Mother’s Candle Lighting Service, and church resolutions upon the death of members. She was a member of the Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Bible Study, and Prayer Circle. She coordinated the Prayer Circle presentations and was the Care Ministry chairperson. Mary Anne was a Certified Lay Servant.

Mary Anne was a charter member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She was a supporter of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and served as an Honorary Ambassador for UNICEF. Just recently, Mary Anne was honored by the New York Alumni Chapter of Claflin University (SC).

Mary Anne is survived by her sister, Rita Johnson, niece Nicole Rose (Lancelot), nephew Gary Spencer Johnson (Tayla), her beloved grandnephews: Eli and Payton Harper-Johnson, and Malcolm and Myles Rose; sisters-in-law Sharon Seward (Perry), Janice Griffith, Loretta Brown and Tracy Brown (Donovan); brothers-in-law Robert (Sherry), Bruce, and Andrew; cousins Ricky and Assemblywoman Linda Carter, her longtime friends Karen Lepore (Tony) and Nancy Girling; her church family from Trinity United Methodist Church, and a host of devoted family, friends, and loved ones near and far. She was welcomed Home by her parents, her loving husband of 30 years, Barry K. Malson, and sisters-in-law Elaine Crystal Mealy and Julia Malson.
