Born Mary Belle Holcomb to Henry and Ida Holcomb (nee Peachy) on March 4, 1922 in White Plains, NY. During her early and formative years she resided in Scarsdale, White Plains, and the Town of Greenburgh. Educated in the White Plains/Greenburgh School Districts, she is a graduate of White Plains High School.
During World War II she and several friends relocated to Washington, DC, to work for the Internal Revenue Service. Upon her return she married Robert O. Watson of Goochland County, VA. Their union produced two children, Gregory and Leonard and they remained in holy matrimony until his death in 1977.
Until her retirement in 1985 Mary worked as a secretary in the public schools of Greenburgh District 7 where she remains well regarded by staff and former students until this day.
Mary was a member in good standing of Bethel Baptist Church for 97 years where she served on the Sunday School, Beautification and Homeless Ministries. She always offered to help the less fortunate and during the height of the AIDS crisis she volunteered to serve meals with God’s Love We Deliver.
Her greatest loves were her grand/great-grandchildren and children of all ages. Young adults would always congregate at her home where they were in a safe judgement free environment for laughter and fun.
Mary departed her earthly home on December 10, 2024. To cherish her memory, she is survived by her son, Gregory of New York City; the offspring of her pre-deceased son Leonard: grandchildren Ravon Watson of Greenburgh, NY; LeShan Watson of Duluth Georgia; Kenneth Walker of Yonkers, NY; Amber Watson of New Rochelle, NY; five great-grandchildren; loving and dedicated friends Loretta Huggins of Cambria Heights, NY; George & Gloria Batts of White Plains, NY; Desiree Smith of White Plains, NY; and a host of relatives and friends.
“You have fought the good fight. You have finished the race. You have kept the faith. Now there is in store for you the crown of righteousness”...rest well. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
