Legacy of Life

Mary Elizabeth (Wade) Young passed away in Monroe, North Carolina on June 4, 2018.

Mary was born in Amelia, Virginia (Chula) on December 19, 1945. At the age of four, she came to live in Greenburgh, New York with her mother and father, Lloyd and Gladys Wade. She was baptized at age twelve and became a member of Union Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Louis Hughes. Mary later became pianist for the Union Baptist Church Sunday School and organized and played for the Sunday School Choir.

In 1966, Mary married the love of her live, Theodore (Teddy) Young. Together they were active members at Union Baptist Church and both were community-minded as well, having both grown up in Greenburgh during its urban renewal days. Together they participated in marches inspired by the great auditory voice and leadership of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the late Rev. C.H. Churn, Jr., and the Rev. William Augustus Jones.

She helped lay the foundation for many community programs. For years she labored with Warren Jackson and helped promote the MLK Memorial Breakfast along with many other dedicated individuals to help meet the needs of the youth in the community.

By profession, Mary was a typist and secretary for the Town of Greenburgh. Committed to God first, she worked for the Tabernacle of Prayer Revival Center in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She was challenged to get her Associates Degree at Westchester Community College, especially by her husband, Ted.

By a conversion experience, Mary was saved. She joined the Tabernacle of Prayer Revival Center under Apostle Johnnie Washington, and Rev. Dr. Eloise L. Young, Pastor in Ossining, NY where she served as a trustee, and participated in various church activities.

Mary leaves behind: a beloved son, Todd Everett; a beloved sister, Terre; beloved sisters in law, Rev. Dr. Eloise L. Young, and Carolyn (Leach) Cooke; other beloved sister, Robin; beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, grand nieces and grand nephews, and many dear friends.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to Mary’s devoted nieces Amy Monroe, Lori Monroe, and Sheryl Branch, and devoted friend Charlene Graves for their extraordinary care of Mary in North Carolina.

Mary also leaves to cherish her memory, three generations of youth in the Fairview-Greenburgh Community that she and Ted have impacted for a lifetime.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
