Myrna Ross

Listen to Obituary
Myrna Marie Granger-Ross was born on November 13, 1943. She was the first child of Charles and Ruth Granger. Both Myrna and her younger sister Deborah were raised in Harlem, New York.

During Myrna’s formative years, she attended Cathedral High School. Following graduation, she attended Morgan State University where she pursued her passion for teaching and received a bachelor’s degree in education. Myrna married her devoted and loving husband William Ross. Together they raised two children, Mark and Kellie.

Myrna earned a master's degree and dual certificate in Special Education and Reading from both the College of New Rochelle and Lehman College. Upon graduation, Myrna was employed by the New York City Board of Education as an elementary education teacher. Her gifts and talents soon allowed her to become the learning and reading specialist, education evaluator, science coordinator, teacher trainer, and mentor to newly hired educators. As a testament to all of Myrna's educational roles and achievements, in 1972, she was recognized as the "Teacher of the Year" by NYC School District 3.

After completing twenty-three years of teaching in NYC, Myrna became a teacher for Greenburgh Central 7 School District and held numerous leadership positions in the district including serving on the Committee of Special Education as an education evaluator. After a rewarding and prosperous teaching career of 34 years, Myrna retired in 1999 but her dedication to education did not cease. She continued to work as a staff developer and educational consultant for the East Bronx Daycare. Additionally, she taught Reading as an adjunct professor at Westchester Community College, Bronx Community College, and Mercy College.

Myrna not only had a joy for education, she also had an excitement and enjoyment for travel; especially cruises. Myrna also had a loyalty to her close family and friends. On many occasions, you could “spot her” at a family function, shopping at her favorite stores, walking, and dining with her friends.

Myrna also extended her faithfulness to her community and her church. She was an active member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church where she served as the Director of Christian Education, chaired the annual health fair, and sang in the choir. Myrna was also a charter member of Delta Nu Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. in Westchester County. Additionally, she was an associate member of the Westchester County Jack and Jill of America Chapter and served on the Black Scholars Advisory board.

Myrna lived life to its fullest and her infectious smile will forever be etched in the memory of all that loved her.

Myrna is preceded in death by her sister Deborah Dyson, her mother Ruth Granger, and father Charles Granger. She is survived by her husband, William Ross; children Mark Ross (LeAndra Duncan-Ross) and Kellie Ross-Johnson (Maurisse Johnson); grandchildren Kamara Ross, Chandler Ross, Eryn Ross, and Bryce Johnson.
