Nora Haslerig Marshall age 97 of White Plains, New York was born to life on July 29, 1919 in Chickamauga, Georgia and passed peacefully to eternal life on May 2, 2017. She was the seventh child of the late Odessa and Charles D. Haslerig.

She was predeceased by her brothers: George, Charles, Johnny and Willie as well as sisters: Mamie Cooper, Mary Ramey, and Lula Morton.

Nora was raised in Chickamauga, GA and graduated from Howard High School in Chattanooga, TN in 1937. She moved to New York in 1937. She attended Eastview Night School to learn shorthand and typing. Nora met and married James Edward Marshall in 1941. They were married for 43 years until James death.

Nora was a member of Mt. Hope AME Zion Church in White Plains, New York. She served as Sunday School Teacher for 34 years; served on the Trustee Board and was President of the Mt. Hope Education Club. Nora was very active in her church and received many accolades and awards over her lifetime. Most notable were: Sandra Dash Goodman Courage Award, Harriet Tubman Award and Mt. Hope Men’s Certificate of Achievement.

She was given an opportunity through the Urban League to be hired as the first African American to work on the sales floors at WT Grants in White Plains. In addition, Nora was the first African American to work for RCA Service Center, RCA Corporation in White Plains, New York. She retired after 32 years of employment.

Nora was an avid bowler serving as President of the Westchester Bowlers Association for 9 years, a member for 44 years and travelled extensively to tournaments. She enjoyed being involved in the Parkway Homes and Garden Club. During her active membership she enjoyed designing floral arrangements which she entered in contests. She earned many ribbons and awards for her work.

She volunteered for 12 years in the Cooperative Extension of the 4H group in Westchester County.

She leaves to cherish her memories : her devoted caregiver and niece-Yvonne Harris, nieces: Joyce (Thomas) Harrison; Delores Elaine (Bob) Hodges ,Janet Haslerig, Nephews: George (Mary ) Haslerig; Chucky Haslerig, Andre Haslerig, Roderick (Jeanette) Morton, Wayman Cooper, Charles Cooper (Regina Bryant), Allen (Evelyn) Cooper and Bob Harris as well as a host of grand and great nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Nora was fondly named “Nora can” because she visited nursing homes, took people shopping, to medical appointments, and responded to calls from friends and family day and night. She was a collector of elephants and refrigerator magnets from all over the world. Nora leaves behind a legacy of goodwill, strength, wisdom, knowledge, humor and love. Nora was a faithful servant of God, giving of herself, loving her family, friends and trusting in the Lord. She was truly blessed by God.
