Pansy Brown

Listen to Obituary
On February 14, 1911, Mother Pansy Brown was born in Eutawville, South Carolina, to Anna Brown and Isaac Davis. She was raised by her mother Anna Brown along with her sisters, Estelle and Laura. Whenever she recounted her life story of the formative years, she would talk fondly of growing up in Eutawville, South Carolina. After obtaining an education at EI Institute in Eutawville and bearing two children, Anna and George, Mother Pansy left Eutawville for New York in search of lucrative work and greater opportunities for herself and children. Upon her arrival in New York, she lived with relatives in Harlem, Brooklyn, and in Westchester County. In 1941, she moved to White Plains. Like many of her contemporaries, Mother Pansy earned a living through domestic work. As a Christian woman, she desired to help improve the quality of life for her family as well as for others. Through her faith coupled with her tenacity and prudence, she utilized her earnings as a bridge to further her prospects for opportunity. She completed her certification training in healthcare as a Nurse’s Aide. This training enabled her to secure a position with Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, New York, where she enjoyed a full career in healthcare until she retired.

In 1943, she joined Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church, which was located at the time on Brookfield Street in White Plains under the late Pastor James Arnold. Later, under the leadership of the late Rev. Ralph W. Gullette, she became a committed contributor to the building of the new church which is now the present location on Lake Street. She unselfishly devoted her gifts to God by serving as a Deaconess, President of the Flower Club, in the Missionary Society, on the Senior Choir and in the Women‘s Ministry.

For seventy years, Mother Pansy, a spry centenarian continued to serve the Church with unwavering dedication. She attended Bible Study every Wednesday. until her health began to wane. She co-chaired the committee that spearheaded the opening of Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion’s Thrift Boutique, “Anna’s Connection,” (thrift boutique project opened posthumously in memory of her late daughter, Anna Merritt). She was often heard to say as she made her way to Church meetings, “I need to see what’s going on.” She loved God and serving the Church.

Her remarkable work in the Church was complimented by an impressive array of awards, certificates of honor and recognition. Most notable are the Church’s recognition of her evangelizing her family as the first Mother of Four Generations in the Mt. Hope A. M.E. Zion Church; Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church Harriet Tubman Award and membership in the Westchester County Senior Citizen Hall of Fame.

Mother Pansy was predeceased by her husband, Paul Haynes, her sisters, Estelle Gaillard, Laura Davis, her children Anna Merritt and George Greene, son-in-law George Merritt and most recently nephew Chief Master Sergeant LeRoy Davis.
