Philip Keith Sudderth, 74, was born on August 18, 1951 in Valhalla, NY. He was the second of four children born to Bill & Estelle Sudderth. Philip was raised in Greenburgh, NY, and was educated in Greenburgh Central School District. After graduating from Woodlands High School in 1969, he attended Bryant & Stratton College in Boston briefly before returning home to start a lifelong career in mail services.
Throughout his life, Philip was known for his love of music, singing and dancing. He spent hours at Boss Record Shop on Main Street. He always had the latest 45s and knew the latest dances. Philip loved to dance and he was good at it. Listening to Motown and the artists of that time were his passion; The Temptations being his favorite group. Whenever they were on TV, Philip would get up and copy their moves while singing every word perfectly. Fifty years later, if you needed to know about any particular song, Philip would not only know what you were referring to, but he would have the uncanny ability to know WHEN the song was released and what the weather was like that day!
In addition to R&B of the 60’s & 70’s, Philip was exposed to the music of artists like Joe Bataan, Eddie Palmieri, and Tito Puente while hanging out in Brooklyn with our cousins. Closer to home, he discovered Latin clubs in the Bronx. He bought their albums and single-handedly brought Salsa to Greenburgh! Salsa, Merengue and Bachata - he could dance to it all. This earned him the nickname: “Philly Bataan”.
Philip also loved sports, with football and tennis being his favorites. He played tennis quite often, especially on weekends with friends at a local park, and enjoyed watching football games whenever he could. His enthusiasm for these activities reflected his energetic spirit and his love of camaraderie both on and off the court.
Not one to shy away from performing, Philip enjoyed acting and he played the lead in a high school play entitled “Between Two Worlds”. A stellar performance! As a child, Philip played the violin and attended summer music school at the County Center.
His family and friends will forever hold close the memories of his smile, joy, and laughter. Philip built a life rooted in connection, loyalty, and quiet strength. He later made his home in Mt. Vernon, NY, where he spent his final years.
Beloved son of the late Bill & Estelle Sudderth, Philip is survived by his devoted siblings, William H. Sudderth III, Theresa Sudderth, and his niece, N’Deye Diakhate. Philip is predeceased by his sister, June Sudderth. He also leaves behind a host of loving cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will remember him with deep affection.
Philip’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Let us all take comfort in knowing he is now at peace.
