Rubelle Myers

Listen to Obituary
Rubelle Y. Myers, daughter of the late James (Bubba) Young and Dazalee Young Oliver, was born on January 23, 1927, in Eutawville, South Carolina. She began her home-going journey on July 12, 2014 from her home in White Plains, NY.

An entrepreneur, she operated Rubelle’s Beauty Salon and Grocery Store in South Carolina with her late husband Sam in 1949. In 1958, she and Sam relocated to White Plains, New York. She worked at her sister Leola’s beauty salon as well as holding many different jobs to raise money to support and bring their family from Eutawville, S.C. to White Plains in 1962. She was the sole-proprietor of the Red Rose Beauty Salon in White Plains, New York, 1962-1982, and Rubelle Y. Myers Realty, 1982-2007.

Rubelle recognized the importance of education and racial equality in achieving goals in one’s lifetime. Throughout her life, she worked tirelessly to make education and racial equality a reality for all.

She joined the NAACP and worked for the rights of African Americans in the segregated South. She and Sam eventually became Life members of the NAACP in the early 70’s.

Due to the untimely death of her father, Bubba, Rubelle and her sisters were unable to complete school and went to work on the family farm. When she moved to White Plains, Rubelle was determined to complete her education. She completed her high school equivalency degree from the Rochambeau Adult School in 1972. In 2005, after 22 years of hard work and perseverance, Rubelle achieved her lifetime goal of obtaining a college degree. She graduated from Pace University with a degree in Professional Studies at the age of 78. She often spoke fondly of Rev. Frozine Reece Smith who helped and supported her throughout her pursuit of her degree unconditionally. Her strong belief in education was instilled in her children and her grandchildren, all of whom attended college.

Rubelle was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church, serving as President of the Pastor Aids from 1962-2004; Missionary Society; Voices of Bethel, Gospel and Chancel Choirs.

A “grass roots” community activist and political leader, Rubelle recruited volunteers, registered voters and carried petitions to get candidates on the ballot. For 20 years, she was a long time member of the Fisher Hill Association. She served as President of the New York State Beauty Culture League and Vice President of the New York State Beauty Culture Associations, and was President of the White Plains Beautician League, Chapter 110.

Rubelle was an active member of the White Plains-Greenburgh NAACP Executive Board, White Plains Black Caucus, White Plains Democratic City Committee, the Democratic Party, the Black Democrats of Westchester and the Chairperson of the NAACP Freedom Fund for 30 years.

Honors:
• Marilyn Stagg Award for Outstanding Service to the White Plains Democratic Party, 2006 from the
Westchester County Board of Legislators,
• Woman of the Year by the Westchester Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
• Bethel Baptist Mother of the Year award in 1972.

She enjoyed fifty years of marriage with husband Sam; two children, James Herman and Juanita Joyce Jones and her sister Dorothy Mallard preceded Rubelle in death.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory two daughters, Celestine Myers (Eva) of Framingham, MA; Beverly Bryant (William) of White Plains, NY, and three grandchildren: Megan, Gerard and James Bryant. She is survived by three sisters, Mary M. Davis of Eutawville, S.C., Leola Washington of White Plains, NY and Ruth (Leroy) Strokes of Charlotte, NC, as well as three aunts, Jacqueline Smalls, Thelma Tilley and Marie Young, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her and will miss her dearly.

“The thing to do, it seems to me, is to prepare yourself so you can be a rainbow in somebody else's cloud. Somebody who may not look like you. May not call God the same name you call God - if they call God at all. I may not dance your dances or speak your language. But be a blessing to somebody. That's what I think.”
- Maya Angelou

We extend our sincerest thanks and best wishes to you and yours…
May you always feel - as we felt from our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend - the warmth, kindness and love of those closest to you for all the days ahead.
