William White Jr

On Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 7:05pm, William Henry White moved into eternity. He was the only child of his predeceased parents William Henry (1961) and Angie Franklin White (1980).

Willie (as he is known now, but we who have known him from a child know him as Chubby) was born October 28, 1936 in White Plains. He lived with his mother and father at the family home, on Russell Street in Greenburgh, until his mother’s death. His mother kept him at her side. If you saw Mrs. White, you saw Chubby. Everybody in the neighborhood knew Chubby.

It was Mrs. White’s desire that he live in the family home for his life time, but circumstance did not allow it, and he moved into the care of the Hudson Valley Developmental Disabilities Services Office (HDDSO) and YAI (National Institute for People with Disabilities).

They took good care of him. First in the Hawthorne House in Greenburgh for about 2 years, then to Salem House in North Salem for more than 25 years, and he spent almost two years with Hawthorne House in Hawthorne. He also attended WARC and YAI Tarrytown Day Habilitation Program.

Chubby and his Mother were members of Allen AME Church. He loved to sing, usher, and, of course eat. Whenever the church had food around, someone always said keep an eye on Chubby.

The team of people who watched over Chubby through the years said about him that he is a social, friendly and proud African American man who enjoys going out for coffee, donuts and hamburgers.. He likes dressing up. He likes staying in hotels and room service. He enjoyed two trips to Virginia to visit his advocate, Dot Saunders. He likes attending religious service and gospel music. He likes to sing church songs and recite prayers. Hawthorne House said, "he makes the house come alive".

And that’s the way we will all remember Mr. William Henry White, Jr. (Chubby)!
